Does Your AI Notetaker Track Action Items After the Meeting?
Every AI notetaker pulls action items out of a call. What decides whether they get done is what happens on day three: where the items live, whose items the tool keeps, and whether it tracks what other people promised you. Here is what Otter, Fireflies, Fathom and Granola document, what Driffle does, and a Thursday test to run on any tool.
Extraction is the easy part
Every serious AI notetaker gives you a list of action items when the call ends. That list is a snapshot. It says what people agreed to at 3:40 on a Tuesday. By Thursday the useful questions have changed: what did I promise, what was I promised, and which of those is now late.
So the question to ask a vendor is what happens to the list after the meeting. Three things decide it. Where the items live once the summary is closed. Whose items the tool keeps track of. And whether you can see the exact words behind an item when someone says they never agreed to it.
What each tool documents
Otter has an Action Items tab next to the Calendar tab on its home page. Its help center says it shows items assigned to you across all conversations, lets you jump to the spot in the transcript where an item came from, and moves checked items to a Completed section. Two details matter. Its FAQ answers "Can I view Action Item assigned to other users?" with no. And deleting an item is permanent; it cannot be restored.
Fireflies has a Tasks Feed with two tabs. My Tasks shows what is assigned to you. All Tasks shows tasks from every meeting you have access to. You can assign a task to a teammate, a participant or any email address, reassign it, check it off, and send selected tasks to tools like Trello or Microsoft To Do.
Fathom's main route is its task manager integration. Its Asana help page says only action items assigned to you sync, only from calls where you are the recording owner, and you are always the assignee in Asana. Completing or editing an item in Fathom carries over. The same page, last edited in November 2025, says sending all action items was planned, and points to Zapier as the workaround.
Granola's own product page describes pushing action items into Linear, Jira or Asana based on what was said, with a Recipe you set up once to run after every standup or planning session. In that setup the tracking happens in the task tool you already use.
The half that usually goes missing
Read those pages again for one thing: what happens to promises other people made to you. A client who said they would send the signed SOW by Friday. An engineer who said they would check the export bug. Those are the items that quietly die, because nobody owns the reminder.
Otter's list is your items only. Fathom's sync is your items only. Pushing everything into Asana or Linear works if the person who owes you is on your team and uses that board, and does nothing for a client or a vendor. Of the four, Fireflies' All Tasks view comes closest, as long as the meeting is one you can access.
If most of your follow-up risk sits with clients, investors or partners, this is the feature to test first. Your own items are the ones you are least likely to forget.
What Driffle does with them
Driffle captures the call from your Mac without a bot joining, and commitments from the conversation land on a Work screen with two views. Mine is what you owe. Team is what other people owe you, and you can star the people you want to keep an eye on. Items can be grouped by due date, owner or the meeting they came from, and shown as a list or on a calendar.
Each item keeps the evidence. Open one and it shows the words that were said, the meeting it came from, and whether it was spoken as a promise, extracted automatically or added by hand. When the notes name someone who is not linked to a person in your workspace, the task goes to a Suggested list for you to accept or dismiss rather than being filed under a guess.
Plans change, so an item can be released instead of left to rot: reschedule it to tomorrow, three days or next week, hand it off to someone else, or cancel it with a reason. Each change is kept in the item's history, so a deadline that moved three times still shows that it moved. You can also ask Driffle "what are my action items" and get a short checklist, each line linked back to its source.
Two limits, stated plainly. Driffle does not chase the other person for you. There is a Nudge button on items someone owes you, and it is disabled with the note "Nudges aren't delivered yet", because sending one is not built. The person named on a task is never told it exists. And Driffle runs on Macs with Apple Silicon only, as a direct download, with processing in the cloud.
The Thursday test
Run any tool you are trialing through three real meetings early in the week. On Thursday, without opening a single summary, try to answer three questions from the tool alone. What did I promise this week, and which is due first? What did other people promise me? For one item, what were the exact words?
If you have to open meeting notes one by one to answer, the tool extracts action items but does not track them. If the second question comes back empty, it tracks your work and none of what you are waiting on. Either can be fine, as long as you know which one you are buying.
If you want to try it on your own calls, Driffle is available for Apple Silicon Macs at driffle.ai/download.

FAQ
Do AI notetakers track action items after the meeting?
Most extract them, and some keep a list across meetings. Otter has an Action Items tab for items assigned to you, Fireflies has a Tasks Feed with My Tasks and All Tasks, and Fathom and Granola lean on sending items to a task tool like Asana or Linear.
Can I see action items assigned to other people in Otter?
No. Otter's help center says the Action Items list only shows items assigned to you. If you reassign an item to someone else, it leaves your list.
Does Fathom send all action items to Asana?
Not according to its help page. Only action items assigned to you sync, only from calls you recorded, and you are always the assignee in Asana. Fathom suggests Zapier for sending everything else.
Will Driffle remind the person who owes me something?
No, not today. Driffle tracks what other people owe you on its Work screen, with the words they used and the meeting it came from, but the Nudge button is disabled because delivering a nudge is not built yet. The other person is never told about the task.
How do I test whether a notetaker really tracks action items?
Use it for three real meetings, then on Thursday try to list what you promised, what you were promised, and the exact words behind one item, without opening any summary. If you cannot, it extracts items but does not track them.
